Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP therapy is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures nowadays across Pakistan, including Punjab and Multan. It is a non-surgical, office-based procedure.

Uses of PRP Therapy

PRP is used for various purposes, including:

  1. Control of hair fall and promotion of hair growth
  2. Treatment of post-acne scars
  3. Reduction of open pores
  4. Facial skin rejuvenation for a youthful appearance
  5. Treatment of pigmentation and melasma
  6. Anti-aging skin treatment
  7. Vampire facelift
  8. Joint pain and osteoarthritis treatment
  9. Post-burn scar treatment

Preparation and Procedure

For PRP preparation:

  • About 20cc of blood is drawn using a syringe and placed in vials.
  • The vials are centrifuged twice for 7 minutes each.
  • Plasma is separated from the blood, and the lower half (PRP) is collected in a syringe, as it is rich in multiple growth factors. The upper half (PPP – Platelet-Poor Plasma) is not as beneficial.

Procedure Steps

  1. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied using topical creams or nerve-blocking injections.
  2. Injection: PRP is injected into the targeted area (scalp, face, or other body parts for scar treatment) using a fine needle.
  3. Massage: The area is gently massaged to distribute the PRP.

The procedure takes 30-45 minutes when done alone. It can also be combined with:

  • Microneedling (Derma Pen) for enhanced results.
  • Fat injections for better outcomes.

Multiple sessions (typically 4-6 sessions with a 2-4 week gap between each) are usually required for optimal results.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

Following are the key benefits of PRP therapy:

  • Controls hair fall
  • Strengthens hair
  • Increases hair density
  • Promotes hair regrowth
  • Improves pigmentation
  • Enhances scar quality
  • Rejuvenates facial skin for a youthful look
  • Reduces post-acne scars and open pores
  • Helps with joint pain relief

Side Effects

Since PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, the chances of foreign body reactions are minimal. However, some temporary side effects may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Headache and heaviness
  • Post-procedure pain

These side effects typically resolve within 1-3 days.

Recovery Time

  • For hair PRP: You can resume work the same day.
  • For facial PRP: Swelling or redness may persist for 2-3 days but settles afterward.
  • For joint PRP: Pain usually subsides within 1-2 days.

Overall, downtime is minimal.
